Periodontology is the branch of dentistry that focuses on the health of the gums and the entire complex of tissues that support your teeth.
Periodontal disease, or periodontitis, is characterized by the appearance of a set of inflammatory conditions that damage the tissues surrounding the teeth. Initially, gingivitis sets in, where the gums become intensely red, swollen, and may bleed. If left untreated, this gingivitis can develop into periodontitis, where the gums detach from the teeth and periodontal pockets form between the teeth and gums.
Without intervention and treatment, periodontal disease progresses further into the bone, destroying the periodontal ligament, causing the teeth to become loose and requiring extraction or eventually falling out on their own.
There are many periodontal treatments, ranging from medication to surgery, and they are always tailored to the degree or type of periodontal damage in each patient.
In recent years, the introduction of dental lasers has changed the course of periodontal disease for the better, as lasers are a minimally invasive, non-surgical technique. At the Implantis Dental Care clinic, it is used every time in periodontal therapy. It removes the inflamed tissue around the roots of the affected teeth, biostimulates the periodontal tissue cells, reduces inflammation, and stimulates healing.
